Capital of Culture 2018
The city of Leeuwarden arose from a number of three mounds at the shore of the Middelzee, an estuary of the North Sea. Already before the year 1000 there were people living here. Around 1600 Leeuwarden belonged to the ten most important cities in the Netherlands. More recently Leeuwarden was chosen as European Capital of Culture in 2018. The walking tour takes you through the historic centre of the city with a short visit to the leaning tower Oldehove and to the Fries Museum where you can learn everything about Friesland.
